he Sunny "D’s" is a group of Hastings Senior High students who are available for community sessions, teaching their peers the facts about HIV/AIDS. All group members are volunteers who have been trained and certified as HIV/AIDS instructors through the American Red Cross.

The Sunny "D" members offer two different types of presentations. One is an innovative theatrical style program that portrays the struggles and difficult decisions often faced during adolescents. The other type of session gets the audience members involved for they are asked to participate in different activities as they learn the basic facts about HIV/AIDS. Facts discussed about the disease include mode of transmission, testing, treatment, protection, and prevention. Abstinence from risky behaviors such as unprotected sex and needle sharing is emphasized as the only 100% effective way of prevention from HIV infection. Audience members are given prevention skills so they are able to make safe and healthy decisions, protecting themselves from the disease. All presentations are respectful of any boundaries set by parties requesting the community sessions.

The presentations done by The Sunny "D’s" are free of charge and are done in a nonjudgmental and culturally sensitive manner. For more information or to schedule a presentation call or write:

Awareness and Education

Speakers Bureau

Nebraska has a group of diverse individuals whose lives have been touched directly through personal experience by HIV/AIDS. We are dedicated to increasing awareness and educating our communities about this preventable disease.

This is accomplished through the following efforts:

  • Provide a basic understanding of how HIV is transmitted in an attempt to decrease the fear surrounding this disease.
  • Educate through the experience of those living with HIV/AIDS and the people who love and care for them.
  • Increase the awareness that HIV/AIDS affects us all as a global community, infected or not.
  • Promote the idea that those living with HIV/AIDS need understanding and compassion rather than judgment and that no one "deserves" this disease.

The HIV AIDS pandemic is a fact of life in every community. Holding an AIDS awareness event with one or more speakers may be an effective way to educate people in your school, community or religious group about the effects of HIV AIDS, what individuals can do to prevent its spread and how to provide help to those afflicted with it.

Contact: Ann Chambers ann.chambers@nebraska.gov for a list of speakers in your area

1. Who is the audience? Who is the sponsor? Your name and a contact person at your site.

Approximate size and type of audience expected or invited.

2. What HIV Regional Advisory Group are you in?  click here for a PDF MAP

3. When is the event scheduled or planned? The desired date of the presentation. Is this flexible? What other dates and times would work?

4. Where will the event take place? What time frame do you have?

5. Why do you need a speaker about HIV/AIDS? The educational services you need such as: basic transmission and prevention, a personal story from a speaker living with or affected by HIV/AIDS. or other topics related to the disease.

6. How will you advertise this event? Are there any special requests or needs? Your organization may need to provide an honorarium for any presentation involving a member of the Speakers' Bureau. The honorarium can be waived by special arrangements with the Speaker.

Please keep in mind...

The person booking your engagement accepts the responsibility of matching a speaker with a requesting agency's educational requirements. In balancing the educational needs of community groups, requests may be made for speakers with experience similar to that of the audience.

For example, a drug/alcohol treatment center might desire a speaker who is in recovery and feel this person would be most appropriate for the audience based upon thier life experience.

These requests will be met as long as no exclusion on the basis of gender, race, physical ability, religion , or sexual orientation.
